Describe Your Group

Our group consists of two members: Brian Leipprandt and Christopher Russell. Chris is a Computer Engineering senior and Brian is a dual CS/Computer Engineering senior.


What do you hope to gain by participating in this challenge?

Gain experience working with the the linux kernel, specifically working with device drivers

Where are you located, and what hours do you tend to work?

We are both located in Austin during the school year and tend to work whenever we have free time.

What is your project?

Beagle DVR

Project Description

Our goal is to interface a USB TV tuner with the beagleboard. If there is enough time we would also like to add additional digital video recording such as storage(both local and across the network), remote control, and a intuitive UI.

We have decided to use a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-850 B2F5 for our project. We chose this device for two reasons: 1st) It is one of the cheaper USB based tuners that is widely available. 2nd) The support for this project has not yet been integrated into the mainline kernel, thus to get it properly working we will need to do more than just plug it in.

We will be modifying the drivers written by dheitmueller located at http://kernellabs.com/hg/~dheitmueller/polaris4.

Project Scope

Our first stage will be to install the drivers on a x86 linux distribution. Then we will get modules compiling with the omap3 kernel. Next we install them and attempt to debug.

What license(s) does your project use?

The code we will be modifying exists under the GPL V2 and we will continue to use this license.
