HD
From Texas Instruments Embedded Processors Wiki
The abbreviation HD stands for a set of high definition video standards typically used for broadcasting (see HDTV). Several of these standards are coming in a wide screen aspect ratio. The image sizes are described by the terms 720i, 720p, 1080i or 1080p with image formats of 1280x720 (16:9) and 1920x1080 (16:9) and several others.
There is further the Consumer HDV standard with a 1440x1080 (4:3) resolution. It can as well be categorized as being a HD standard.
Some prototypes and technology demos at CeBit 2006 even made to up to 3840x2160. This is double the width and height (or four times the pixels) of the standard 1080i/p formats. These models were primarily designed for serving special high quality and resolution demading industry and medical applications.
Research and testing for successor formats are in progress. One of this is the already advanced UHDV in Japan that is providing image formats of up to 7680x4320 (4 times width and height of 1080i/p) at 60 full frames per second. The most important aspect in such a technology is the bandwidth optimisation and efficient video compression.
